Inquiry:
Mana Moana - The Ocean
For our inquiry topic this term we will be focusing on Mana Moana - The ocean. We will start by learning about the different levels of the ocean and the different creatures that live in it. We will then start to look at how we can conserve our natural resources and look after our oceans. The children will undertake a project that will help improve the environment and we will have a day of sharing at the end of the term.
Maths:
This term we will explore Number, Statistics and Measurement. The children will also learn about graphing, multiplication, division, addition and subtraction. Basic facts are very important as they are the basis for a lot of the topics in maths. Please encourage and help your child to log into mathletics and learn their facts every night.
Literacy:
This term in reading we are going to focus on comprehension skills. These include summarising, predicting, activating prior knowledge and vocabulary. In writing the children will be learning to write letters and procedural texts. Perhaps you can help at home by encouraging your children to read these types of texts.
Homework:
Every Monday, children will bring home their homework book with their weekly spelling words. They will also be expected to read every night. They are to learn the words and do their homework throughout the week and return their homework book to school on Friday. We would appreciate it if you could ensure homework is done each night with your child.
Swimming:
This term, the portable swimming pool will provide Oranga children with the opportunity to learn about water safety and water confidence. Swimming sessions will begin this term and Te Rangi children will get a chance to learn some swimming skills with the YMCA swimming instructors.
Lunch:
We are encouraging children to bring healthy food items in their lunchbox and a water bottle to school so they can regularly drink during the day without interrupting learning time to go to the outside tap. We are a ‘water-only’ school, so please refrain from giving small packs of juice or any other kind of drinks.
As a school, we are trying hard to reduce rubbish and to encourage composting. We expect the children to take home their lunch boxes with all their scraps (unless they can be added to our worm farm) and wrappers for recycling. This is an opportunity to use small containers to help reduce litter and reuse resources.
Summer:
Although some days it doesn’t feel like it, it is summer and it is very hot during the day. Please make sure your child has a clearly named school sun hat as these are compulsory in Term 1 and 4. School sun hats can be bought at the office for $9.00.
Before and after school routine:
We expect all children to be ready to start the school day promptly at 9.00am. This means children need to arrive between 8.30am and 8.45am every day.
At the end of the day, we expect children to leave the school grounds before 3.15pm. For security reasons, we lock the gates at 3.15pm. We have before and after school care facilities run by Skids. If you require their services, please contact our school office.
Physical Education
This Term, Te Rangi Children will be involved in Swimming and Biking. We will send home a notice early next week with the times that each class will be swimming. We will also inform the children about the days that they are on the bikes and we would really appreciate it if you could ensure your child wears closed in shoes when they are due to go on the bikes.

Communication:
Communication between home and school is important. You can access further information from your child’s classroom teacher on the classroom blog. A link to these can be found on our school website www.oranga.school.nz. From this website you can also LIKE our school facebook page which will keep you up to date with information and news. We are all very happy to meet with you if you have any concerns or queries about your child’s learning. Please don’t hesitate to contact your child’s teacher to make an appointment.
We look forward to a successful, productive and fun term!
Yours sincerely,
